PockEmul 2.0.0 – New subscription model

New Subscription model

With the objective of securing the future of PockEmul, we decided to transform its economic model towards a monthly subscription system giving access to all emulated models and features.

You are not required to migrate to the subscription model. All your purchased packages will remain ACTIVE and MAINTENANCE is guaranteed.

This new economic model will be effective on October the 1, 2020.

Terms & Conditions

  • PockEmul still comes with 6 fully emulated models for free: HP-41CX, FX-8000G, TI-57, Sharp PC-1245, Sharp PC-1350 and Sharp PC-1500.
  • A monthly subscription gives you access to all emulated devices and all extended features, present and future (because of its recurring costs, the future Cloud functionality will perhaps be part of a complementary subscription) .
  • If you have already purchased one or more specific packages, you will still have access to their corresponding features .
  • It is no longer possible to buy products individually. If you want a package that you haven’t purchased yet, you will have to subscribe to the unlimited plan.
  • The first subscription comes with a free 3-day trial period for new customers and up to 120 days for early adopters.
  • The new business model will be active on October 1, 2020.

Existing customers

FAQ

  • I have already purchased desired packages. Must I upgrade to subscription model ?
    NO.
All your purchased packages will remain ACTIVE and MAINTENANCE is guaranteed. If you don’t want the new subscription and want to keep your existing purchased packages, you have noting to do.

  • Will it be possible to cancel or suspend my subscription ? What about PockEmul sessions files ?
    YES.
You can suspend or cancel your subscription any time (the subscription will remain active until the end of the current monthly period). In this case, PockEmul will still be active on your device, limited to the 6 free  models and to the individual packages you have already purchased.
Your sessions files will be still present in your PockEmul directory.
If you resume your subscription, you will have lost nothing.

  • Can I still buy individual packages before October the 1st ?
    YES.
We think that new customers will prefer to wait for the new subscription model, but we announce this changement with a one week delay to let our existing customers complete their portfolio if there are only interested in some specific existing models.
Please note that existing customers may have up to a 4 month free time period on their subscription based on their past purchases.

  • What if I change my device, reinstall my system or my device breaks down : how do I get all my PockEmul contents (purchases and sessions) back ?
Purchases and subscriptions are automatically restored at each PockEmul startup. If you install or reinstall PockEmul on a second device, a tablet for example, all your purchases and subscription are valid.
Sessions files are located in your device file system and will not be restored. You have to make periodic backup of the ‘pockemul’ directory from your local storage. The future Cloud feature will address the need of sharing sessions between devices (and much more) by storing them into the PockEmul Cloud.

Your personal PockEmul subscription gives you an exclusive access to more than 60 different microcomputers and near 20 compatible devices and printers. For life.

    1. Hi Bert,
if I must admit the negative a priori sentiment of many people about subscription model.
I have change the model from lifetime license model to subscription to secure the future of PockEmul.
I think a lifetime license would be at a cost near 100USD which is a very high price for this type of product.
On the other hand, you will have to spend several thousand of USD to have all those machines in real life 🙂
PockEmul is a huge application (more then 60 models with some exclusive) which needs a lot of support and I think that a 1.99$ ( a cup of coffee 🙂 ) per month is more acceptable than a big amount of a lifetime license.
Perhaps it will change in the future if this model appears unsuccessful.

      regards

      1. I think that most users do not really want to emulate ALL old systems. Probably there is also no one who really uses this software productively. In most cases it might be pure nostalgia to be able to emulate the old systems we learned to program with about 40 years ago. With a monthly fee, the question arises every month whether this nostalgia is worth this price. Sooner or later I would answer this question with “no”, because it is nothing I really need permanently professionally. With a lifetime license, it’s a one-time decision that I want this software. After that, I don’t have to make a new decision every month.

With the old purchase model, I had decided to buy several times. If the Ti-74 Basicalc was now also available in the purchase model, I would buy it immediately, even for $20. But if I would change to the subscription model now, then I would lose the permanent right of use from the existing purchases.

My suggestion would be: Parallel to the subscription model also lifetime licenses for individual emulators for a purchase price of 10-20 dollars per emulator.

        Regards

        Bert

        1. Thank you so much for your feedback.
I will think about the dual business model.
By the way, if you subscribe you will never loose permanent right of use from your past purchases. If you stop the subscription, your purchases remain valid.

          1. I use Pockemul with the old pay model on Android for some systems. Now I have also tried the current Windows version. But there is no menu item “storage”. Is it no longer possible to save the status of a system in the current Windows version? Or is it done differently now? In the old version 1.4.3 there was this menu entry.

        2. I personally been tinkering with some devices that appeal to me. As an early adaptor to the original pockemul and I don’t fancy any subscription even if it’s a penny a month and ongoing for me it’s simple, choose what you like from the range and keep it , no worries about online subscription which do have their own problems . If we could just pay what we want and carry on. For others who maybe casual or new the subscription model may suit them.

  1. Version 2.0 (subscription)
    Starting a saved session Sharp PC E500 / 256 KB RAM-Card / CE 126P I get the following message:
“cannot create image. not enough memory”
After pressing OK it works, but this a bug, which is new to Version 2. 1.x was working fine with this constellation.
    Galaxy Note 10 / Android 10 Kernel 4.14.113-19542037

    1. Thank you for your feedback.
I just check and I don’t have this error.
If there is no confidential information in your session, could you send it to contact@pockemul.com ?
Perhaps PockEmul tries to restore the paper image and this one is too big.
If you never have ‘cut’ the paper, PockEmul manages an infinite size and always appends space to the paper.
At the end, this image is too big.
I wanted to add the famous red band on the side of the paper to manage the ‘no more paper’ feature. but I had no time to do it.
If it is the issue, then just cut the paper in the ‘Context Menu / Paper’ entry.

      Anyway, I must manage this.

      Regards

      1. In fact the error comes from the Post-it object.
It will be fixed in the next minor release.
You can safely press OK on the error message, it will have no side effect.
